Interesting, isn’t it? Just a few months ago if you asked someone how they are doing they likely responded with, “busy, I am crazy busy!” However, we are living in a lockdown where many have gained some unexpected spare time. Why not use the time wisely by studying the attributes of God?
Check out these posts on busyness:
I’m Busy
Interestingly, we have convinced ourselves that we lacked time for the pursuit of the Lord, reading a good book, or grabbing a walk with the family. We thought that time was the issue. However, we need to be honest with ourselves. Has anything changed with the new found time? How is your pursuit of the Lord? What are you doing with the extra time? If we are not intentional, this bonus of time will be swallowed up in a constant scrolling of a screen. However, I want to offer you a different strategy. Why not make use of the time?
God has giving us a gift of time. What’s more, in this time of suffering, confusion, doubt, worry, loss of income or health, and much more, I can think of no better time to launch into a study of the attributes of God.
Where there is despair, fear, or suffering, the character of God will either be doubted or worshiped. In times like these, people will either run to Him or from Him. My hope is that during this lockdown you will find great comfort, hope, and peace in who our God is!
Below are a few of my favorites on the subject. They are listed in no particular order.
Knowing God By J.I. Packer
Knowing God by J.I. Packer is such a great book. Read it, put it on the shelf, and then take it off the shelf next year and read it again. You will be amazed by how much you will gain by rereading.
The Attributes of God By A.W. Tozer
A.W. Tozer’s two volumes are easy to read and follow. If you have not read anything by Tozer, do yourself a favor and buy these!
The Pleasures Of God By John Piper
The Pleasures of God might take you a little while to work through, but you will not regret the effort! This book is also available as an audio book.
Suffering And Sovereignty By Various Authors
If you would prefer to lock down on just one attribute of God, consider this book on the sovereignty of God in our suffering. It is edited by John Piper and Justin Taylor. The book is divided into three sections. Firstly, The Sovereignty of God in Suffering. Secondly, The Purpose of God in Suffering. Lastly, The Grace of God in Suffering.
None Like Him By Jen Wilken
Ladies, do yourself a favor and buy this book. Your heart will be filled with joy as Jen Wilken unpacks “10 ways that God is different from us.” Grab a highlighter and a coffee and get to reading! Great book!
Big Truths For Young Hearts By Bruce Ware
Calling all moms and dads. Grab a copy and dive into reading this with your teens or pre-teens! But, don’t let the title fool you. Mom or dad will benefit greatly as they read this book to their son or daughter!
There are certainly many other great books available on the topic! But, let me take up no more of your time. Go snag a book and let the attributes of God feed your soul during this lockdown.
If you don’t have a home church, join us for our livestream this Sunday as we unpack some of the attributes of God found in Isaiah 40.
Great resources Tim! You need hope during these times? Take advantage of these resources to dive deeper into God’s Word.
