30 Book Challenge – My 2019 List

Ok so if you did not read 30 Book Challenge, you might want to go back and read that before proceeding.

Some of you have asked for “the 2019 reading list.” Below are some of the books I plan to read for 2019. You should make your own list – these are books that interest me. I promise you, you will not meet the 30 book challenge unless you are picking books that interest YOU! So, don’t try to read my list. Now that said, you might find some of the books below to be interesting to you. If so, great! Let’s get to reading in 2019.  Creativity, Inc.: Overcoming the Unseen Forces That Stand in the Way of True Inspiration by [Catmull, Ed, Wallace, Amy]I started this book already, but I will not finish this year. That is why I have included it in my 2019 list. It’s a great book that gives a bit of the back story to Pixar. The book weaves the back story while also recommending business management principles. These are ok – nothing earth-shattering here… Like I said in the previous post, I like reading about what happened, behind the scenes.

This book is written by my good friend Aron Osborne. I So Many Mountains... Which Ones to Climb?: What Really Matters in Church Life by [Osborne, Aron]can not recommend this book enough. Taken from the description on Amazon.com, “Serious mountaineers believe there are a handful of mountains worth conquering – Everest, K2, Annapurna, The Eiger… everything else is just practice.

Christianity has many mountains, as well. Which ones do we conquer? Which ones are necessary to climb? Which are simply molehills?

In So Many Mountains… Which Ones to Climb? Aron Osborne reflects on more than twenty years of pastoral ministry to stir afresh the things that will matter most in church relationships, the Everests worth climbing. Aron presents his climbing card, with stories of victories and some failures. Readers will find themselves encouraged and ready to strap on their mountain boots to scale the mountains that matter most.”

God's Big Picture: Tracing the Storyline of the Bible by [Roberts, Vaughan]Each year I try to read a few books with a Biblical Theology. What is Biblical Theology? Glad you asked! Biblical theology seeks to give you the Bible’s storyline. God’s Word is not 66 random books. It is the story of God’s glory in salvation through judgment. Each book plays its part to unpack the glory of our God in redeeming fallen man. Much more could and should be said, but I will save that for another post in the future.

At this time I only plan to read the 3rd part of The The Goldsworthy Trilogy: Gospel & Kingdom, Wisdom & Revelation by [Goldsworthy, Graeme]Goldsworthy Trilogy, The Gospel In Revelation. FYI, this is another Biblical Theology book.

One last Biblical Theology that has been on my reading list for…. too many years is this gem by Edmund Clowney. A final word on Biblical Theology – if you would like to better grasp the whole story of God’s Word or if you struggle to put the pieces of your Bible together, I recommend snagging one of these books. Let me know if you decide to read one of these. I would love to hear your thoughts!

I look forward to reading John MacArthur’s new book, Christ’s Call To Reform the Church. This book seeks to unpack the message to the seven churches in Revelation. I am sure that MacArthur’ book will pack a punch that will be well worth my time! Amazon’s description says, “Christ’s Call to Reform the Church admonishes the church today to learn from the mistakes God’s people have made in the past, rather than commit them again. The Word of God has many benefits, one of which is that it reveals our blind spots. That’s what this book does—it shines a light on problems we didn’t know we had. May it be embraced by Christians everywhere, spurring them toward the God-honoring, grace-driven work of continued reformation.”

Here are more books I hope to read in 2019…

Passion in the Pulpit: How to Exegete the Emotion of Scripture by [Vines, Jerry, Dooley, Adam B.]

Reading the Bible Supernaturally: Seeing and Savoring the Glory of God in Scripture by [Piper, John]

Expository Exultation: Christian Preaching as Worship by [Piper, John]

Brothers, We Are Not Professionals: A Plea to Pastors for Radical Ministry, Updated and Expanded Edition by [Piper, John]

The Pastor's Justification: Applying the Work of Christ in Your Life and Ministry by [Wilson, Jared C.]

So this one might seem a bit weird, but I will be reading my own book this year. I Esther's Gospel: The God Who Is There by [Merwin, Tim]will read it to further evaluate it and to then, hopefully, write another book in the future.

There will be more great books to read in 2019. I didn’t list them above, but there will be books that are lighter on my little brain. These are books that can be read before bed or when coffee is not needed! I look forward to finding a new author, reading a biography or two, or finding another amazing back story. Don’t forget… the Bible is the most important book you can read in 2019! Other ESV Reformation Study Bible, Condensed Edition (2017) - Light Brown, Leather-Likebooks are… other books. But, the Bible is in a category all on its own. So, what is your plan to read the Bible in 2019? Will you read it cover to cover or will you do a deeper study of a particular book? There is no right answer, but there does remain the question, What is your plan to read the Bible in 2019?

I close this post with a quote from one of my favorite authors. “The biblical mandate is; keep reading what will open the Holy Scriptures to you more and more.”  John Piper.

A final thought on the goal of reading 30 books in 2019. Keep it fun! If you are burdened with your reading, just to accomplish a goal, then slow down. Reading should require us to work a bit. And yet, reading is something to be enjoyed. So, feel free to kick the 30 book challenge to the curb – and… keep reading…

What are a few of the books on your list for 2019? I would love to see what you are reading or what you might recommend from 2018.

Comment below with a quick bullet list of a few of the books that you are considering for 2019.
